Our Rob Roy Glacier Guided Walk is one of the best full day activities in Wanaka. The Rob Roy Glacier sits in the grand Mt Aspiring National Park (World Heritage area). The glacier is a rare hanging glacier, beginning high above on Rob Roy Peak (2606 metres). It hangs off the steep mountainside and descends into the Rob Roy Valley. Chunks of ice sometimes drop from the terminal face (end of the glacier, and we are a safe distance away), and this makes for a spectacular sight!
Your day will begin with a beautiful scenic drive around Lake Wanaka and into the Matukituki Valley. Once in the valley, there are several fords (river crossing for vehicles) and more magnificent scenery. You will arrive at Raspberry Flat where your guided walk will begin, starting in farmland and then heading into the New Zealand alpine rainforest. You gradually climb to rise above the treeline to views four glacier faces – there is no other spot in Wanaka that is better for lunch!
Our local guides know all the best photo spots that are ‘off the beaten track’, and will safely transport you and guide your trip. The extensive knowledge they share with you about this landscape and the Wanaka area will offer an insight few others get to hear. This is one of Wanaka’s hidden gems, and we can’t wait to share it with you.
