About Wanaka

The township of Wanaka is the gateway to the Mt Aspiring National Park and one of New Zealand’s premier resort towns to visit summer or winter. December - February

Summer brings to Wanaka the perfect long hot days you daydream about when planning a summer holiday. The crystal clear water in the lake warms up for swimming, and a host of other water activities such as boating, jet-skiing, kayaking, paddle boarding and more. You will find holidaymakers and locals alike lining the beach with their umbrellas, picnic baskets, & towels, all basking in the summer sunshine.

March - May

Autumn in Wanaka in truly stunning, as by mid April the full glowing Autumn colours are out, with brilliant golds, yellows, and reds lining most trees around the area. With vibrant and a soft lowering sun, coupled with the lake, river and mountain backdrop, autumn makes Wanaka truly a photographers dream. The weather is settled and the cool mornings often make way for beautiful, warm, sunny afternoons and are an autumn trademark.

June - August

Winter time brings a buzz and a spring in the step of the locals. The ski season traditionally runs from about mid June to the start of October, and the town of Wanaka turns into a mecca for not only New Zealander’s, but also the world’s top snow sports athletes. Domestic and international tourists come to ski Cardrona and Treble Cone ski resorts, which between them boast many of New Zealand ski resort bests snow facilities.

September - November

Springtime in Wanaka is glorious. The snow in the alpine slowly recedes while the townships trees and gardens burst into colourful life. There is still plenty of snow on the big mountains and ski resorts, leaving around 6 more weeks of skiing and a picture perfect snowy backdrop to almost every view you have. The days get longer and the temperatures increase allowing many to bring out their mountain bikes and hiking boots.
